Lots of ink on the page in this week’s drawings. I love doing these drawings that are like 4 or 5 drawings in one.
Harry Epstein Tool Co.
Harry J. Epstein Co. Tools and hardware. Since 1933. Kansas City, MO
I saw the ghost sign on the back of this building but I didn’t think this place would still be in business…and from the front, it didn’t look to be in business. But we walked in and sure enough it was.
While it’s not a coffee shop, people came in and hung out and talked like it was.
The cluttered dusty aisles full of random tools and creaky floors made me feel like traveling back in time.
They had a crazy music machine made for funeral homes that played some of the most depressing music ever. They were nice enough to show us how it worked and nice enough to not play the music the whole time we hung out.
Blip Roasters.
Coffee shops are the best. People hanging out, meeting, working, making things. It’s a great way to get a vibe for a city and the people that live there.
Blip Roasters. Kansas City, MO
A coffee shop that roasts its own beans AND sells motorcycle stuff? That’s as cool as it gets. Oh, and they made a mean scone as well.
Oddly Correct Coffee Bar.
Another joint that roasts their own beans and have a killer space in what looks like an old gas station.
They were sold out so we didn’t get to try their homemade biscuits. That’s worth a trip back to Kansas City just to try those.
Hotel Kansas City.
Hotel Kansas City. Kansas City, MO
Great old hotel that has been updated without losing all of the old charm and detail. I especially love that they kept the old room key and mail slots. In a few years they’re going to need to put up a plaque explaining what it was used for.
They also had a great lobby bar where we could have a glass of wine with our dog Davis…who liked to greet each guest as they came through the front door.
Dig the observation on coffee shops being places for sensing community. I agree and also make it a point to swing through grocery stores. Similar folks around... making things (dinner). Love these... so much fun! Thanks for sharing 'em.
Love these. Thanks for putting them out into the world.
