Morelli’s Market.
Morelli’s Market. East Side St. Paul, MN
Morelli’s is an old school East Side St. Paul joint I’ve seen and heard about for years. I was a little surprised to discover the place is mostly liquor store with a tiny deli crammed in the back where to get to you need to weave your way through a maze of beer cases stacked high and on special. (I guess we know where the money is.)
The place smells great…like pizza sauce, unless you’re at the register in which case it smells like Febreze…which is not a good combo…but, whatever.
We walked out with a 7 pound frozen container labeled: “Lasagna for two”. If that’s not totally Italian, I don’t know what is.

This guy had to be a regular. I can’t say for sure, but I bet if I went there today, he’d be there.
I asked him what his favorite items were and he proceeded to point at every item in the deli case before walking over to the freezer and pointing at every item in there as well. At least he narrowed it down for us.
Although I did find it odd that his shopping cart was full of booze bottles and not one food item. Hmmm.
Lyndale Liquors Market.
Lyndale Liquors Market. Minneapolis, MN
A little different experience from Morelli’s (and by “little different, I mean A LOT different), but the idea is the same…a deli in a liquor store.
Lyndale Liquors just moved into a giant new space and added a deli/market. I came for the roast beef dip sandwich, and damn it was good.
They also have a frozen lasagna…although i’m guessing it’s not 7 pounds worth and probably costs twice as much. That makes me think I should do a taste test. Stayed tuned for that one.
Landmark Center.
Landmark Center. St. Paul, MN
Every Sunday the Landmark Center is doing something called “Urban Expedition” where they feature a different region from around the globe. This week was Argentina…with music, dancing and food. They had me at food.
The lines were long and they ran out of a lot of the food, but that was ok…it was just cool seeing so many people out doing cool stuff. And they never ran out of dancing…there were some serious moves out on the floor. There was no way I was going to dance…I leave that to the experts.
Lake Harriet.
Lake Harriet. Minneapolis, MN
Winter finally turned into winter.
The lake froze, the temperatures dropped, we got a little snow and Lake Harriet turned into a playground with people fishing, biking, walking, ice sailing and all kinds of other crazy things Minnesotan’s do on a frozen lake.
I gotta say I do love the buzz on days like this when people get out of the house wearing 10 layers of clothing.
Empty Lake Harriet.
And just like that…winter was gone.
We went from 0 degrees to 35 degrees seemingly overnight.
The lake went from a winter wonderland to vacant and dreary as the weather warmed and puddles of water, fog and mist filled the lake.
But that didn’t stop this guy, who had the lake (and all the fish) to himself.
Oh Morelli’s. That place is wild and usually under extra "coverage" from SPPD. Let us know if/when we can help with the pasta test.
I stopped by Kramarczuks this weekend. It was packed. I like the tip about the Landmark Center. Will have to check it out. Another fun event is Como's Music Under Glass series, also on Sundays.
