This week we hit a couple places from the first time around that we hated to see go, but it turns out the replacements were just as good or even better.
Momo Sushi.
It was Sunday night, but that didn’t matter, this place was hoppin’ like it was Saturday night. The crowd was young and I guess with prices this low you’re gonna be busy and the crowd is gonna be young. (I just wish the food was a little better.)
Momo Sushi doesn’t just have Japanese food, they also have Tibetan food…and as the name implies, they have momo’s…which were just ok.
While “cheap” and “sushi” usually scares me to death…that’s not the case with Momo Sushi. The sushi isn’t the best, but it doesn’t feel like the kind of place that would make you sick.
With the crazy price of eating out these days, it’s nice to see a place trying to do stuff cheaper. It’s odd that it’s a sushi place…but I think you can eat sushi here cheaper than you can get a burger at a lot of places.
Sabor Cuencano.
Last time around this was a great bakery so it was sad to see it go, but the replacement is pretty amazing. Again, the place was packed and had a great buzz.
Lots of families having dinner together. Great to see so many immigrant families out eating together and making it possible for us to try some pretty amazing food.
South America’s comfort food at its best. And some killer homemade mystery hot sauce.
The language barrier was real, but good food is good food, no matter how you say it.
Khao Hom Thai.
Another place that used to be a great spot…the old Karta Thai. We were bummed about the loss of the best Thai place in town. How could this place ever live up?
Well, I have a new favorite Thai restaurant. This place was amazing. Everything was fantastic. The sauce …WOW. And the server was a huge fan…his enthusiasm for the food was real, and he wasn’t wrong.
The crowd waiting for take-out was mostly older (and obviously wiser) and may have seemed a little concerned that too many people would find out about their secret spot.
They look when you realize you ate way too much food at this one stop and you have two more spots to go.
Panaderia Ecuatoriana.
Sunday night and this place was hoppin’, too. Great to see so many people out eating and hanging out.
Racks and racks of self-serve bakery items…grab a tray and try not to get one of everything.
Baked goods and candy…lots and lots of candy. And with that comes happy kids.
Francis Plant-Based Burgers.
As far as “fake burgers” go, these are pretty good. Like any veggie burger you gotta put on all the burger toppings to pull it off…but it works. And they have a bar (with real drinks, not just NA drinks).
Neon…check. Mural…check. Trendy decor…check. I guess it makes sense that they went hipster with the whole vibe on a plant-based burger joint.
First time I ever tried a Francis burger was from their food truck. It’s always cool to see a place make the leap to a brick and mortar, especially when they add a bar to the mix.
