Walkin’ Around Checkin’ Stuff Out. #7
Vivront Knife Shop.
Edina, MN
I love it when I see someone do a thing and do it really well. Take knife sharpening…there’s a little shop in Edina that not only sharpens knives, they sell beautiful handmade knives.
I stopped in to check the place out and I got a masterclass in sharpening and what goes into a well-made knife.
As someone that can barely cook and has zero knife skills I have no business owning a $350 knife. (But if I did, I know where I’d go.)
I love a place where someone is working and actually doing something tangible with their hands. Knife sharpening is one of those things. It takes skill and passion to do well and when you are finished you took a dull knife and made it useful again.
Damn, I love the simplicity in that.
Like anyone that is really into what they do Joseph will talk knife sharpening all day long if you let him.
He even has a tool that measures the sharpness of a blade. He smirked a little when he told me the knife he just finished was sharper today than the day it was made.
In a world full of people sitting in front of screens making Powerpoint presentations it’s nice to see someone doing something useful with their hands.
People On The Streets.
This guy had a real bounce to his step and was lookin’ sharp. You have to appreciate anyone that goes through the effort to match the jacket with the tie with the pants with the shoes all the way down to the socks. (There’s a reason I wear all black everyday.)
It’s getting colder in Minnesota. Funny how cold 50 feels after it’s been 80 and 90 (and how warm it will feel after it’s been 0 and 10).
Nothing makes me feel colder than watching someone stand on a windy downtown street-corner. At least he had a coffee…probably iced.
Target Practice.
There’s a nice little bench in a small park in Northeast Minneapolis where if you aren’t careful you be the canvas in some birds idea of a Jackson Pollock painting.
You’ve been warned.
Boys Like Trucks.
I hate to stereotype, but I guess all little boys do like trucks. Even Puppies.
I could not get Davis to leave the scene of these construction trucks working on trimming a tree…he was fascinated and probably would have sat there all day.
Ghost Sign.
I love this old beer sign painted on the side of a building in a St. Paul neighborhood.
I bet the building used to be a corner bar that went through a lot of Schmidt Beer in its day.
(More) Bars of Northeast Minneapolis.
Jimmy’s Bar. NE Minneapolis, MN
I have to admit, of all the Northeast bars, Jimmy’s is the bar I know the least about. In fact I’m not even sure I’ve been in Jimmy’s. Oh, who am I kidding…of course I’ve been in Jimmy’s, I just don’t remember it. That’s the sign of a true Northeast bar.
Tony Jaros. NE Minneapolis, MN
“Home of the Greenie!”
If you’ve ever had a Greenie, you MIGHT remember it. If not, it’s the kind of electric green drink you need to try once.
Tony’s has a little kitchen to order food from…it’s been everything from a mashed potatoes and meatloaf kind of a spot to a fancy burger spot depending on who’s running the kitchen.
One thing’s for sure, no matter what’s coming out of the kitchen, the beers and Greenies will be flowing and the crowd is always interesting.
A true classic Northeast bar if ever there was one.
